europe responds to us

European leaders are uniting to push back against U.S. pressures regarding Greenland. The U.S. government, under President Trump, has threatened to impose tariffs on eight European nations if they don’t agree to a deal concerning Greenland. These tariffs could reach 10% and are set to take effect on February 1, 2026. European leaders see this as an attempt to undermine their unity and transatlantic relations.

In response, EU ambassadors gathered for a meeting to discuss coordinated actions. The European Commission has proposed a €93 billion package of retaliatory measures, which will be discussed further in an upcoming extraordinary EU summit in Brussels. NATO’s involvement underscores the military aspect of the situation as European leaders weigh their options. Danish troops are prepared to respond with force to any invasion of Greenland, reinforcing the commitment to protect the territory.

However, instead of rushing to counter the U.S. move, EU leaders are prioritizing diplomacy. They plan to delay any decisions on retaliation until after Trump’s deadline.

The European Union has also activated its Anti-Coercion Instrument, a tool that has never been used before. This mechanism is designed to allow the EU to retaliate against economic pressure from outside powers. The Commission has presented this option to member states as a way to respond to U.S. threats.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament is considering suspending the EU-U.S. trade agreement, which was previously reached last summer. Leaders from the European People’s Party have stated that approval of this deal is impossible due to the ongoing threats regarding Greenland.

Greenland itself is firmly stating that it will not accept U.S. demands. Both the Greenlandic and Danish prime ministers have emphasized that Greenland is not for sale. They stress the territory’s right to self-determination and their refusal to be governed by another nation.

In addition to diplomatic measures, NATO allies, including Denmark and other member countries, are increasing military presence in Greenland. This is seen as a way to protect the island against U.S. pressures.

The situation remains tense, with Europe endeavoring to maintain its position and unity in the face of external challenges.
