mayor urges trump action

As NYC Mayor Eric Adams pushes for changes in travel policies, he’s calling on former President Donald Trump to lift travel bans that could affect international fans attending the 2026 World Cup. Adams is concerned that these bans may limit the number of visitors keen to experience the tournament. He believes that NYC should be welcoming to all soccer fans, especially since the city is a host partner for matches at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The World Cup will feature 48 teams across three host countries, making it a historic event.

The travel bans target nearly two dozen countries, which could impact fans from those regions. While athletes may receive exemptions to attend, regular fans might not be so lucky. Adams has been vocal about the importance of allowing fans to travel freely for this significant event. He argues that the World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, 2026, could draw over one million international travelers, generating an estimated $3.4 billion in revenue for the NYC-New Jersey area.

Adams has a history of international travel himself, including a recent trip to Albania that was partly funded by the Albanian government. He aims to strengthen economic ties and boost tourism with the Albanian diaspora in NYC. However, some critics have raised concerns about the transparency of his trips, especially those that are self-funded. They argue that city officials should avoid appearances of influence when traveling abroad. Enhanced reporting on travel-related expenses is being considered to address these transparency concerns.

Despite the challenges posed by immigration restrictions, Adams remains optimistic about the World Cup’s potential success. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also expressed confidence in a safe and successful tournament.

Local officials are coordinating closely with the Trump administration and FIFA to guarantee a welcoming atmosphere for fans. They emphasize the importance of early visa applications and planning, especially given the geopolitical uncertainties surrounding travel.
